One day I was working with two other cashiers. One was in training, so we let her take the first customer that came up. It was a woman who looked pretty harmless, and she was returning a shirt.
It’s the store’s policy to ask the reason why the item was being returned and if anything was wrong with it. Usually we get that it wasn’t the right size or something like that, and it doesn’t matter.
The poor trainee asks this woman this question, and the woman promptly accuses her of stereotyping her and telling her that she thought she was some kind of thief or person who would return a screwed up item. The other cashier stepped in and just took care of it, giving the woman her money back.
Once she left, she examined the shirt she was returning. Indeed it was one of our items, and there was NOTHING wrong with it. Why that woman freaked out and started screaming is still beyond me.

I’ve worked at a grocery store for two years now. This is also the only job I’ve held, minus babysitting. Anyway, every single passing day has me hating my job more and more. It’s not the people I work with; they are awesome and make it easier. It’s the customers. I get it; I’m young and you see me as just working this job to have a little spending money. While that isn’t exactly true, you are still assuming that as someone under the age of 25, it’s just a job to me and I don’t care. However, this is not the case and I am tired of people being rude simply because a register is between us. So, while on break today I wrote up a list of things NOT to do around your cashier. Mind you, this is geared mainly towards the people I see on a daily basis.
I put it in a read more because it was a lot longer than I expected it to be.

Last night I had a customer buy four 12 packs of Coke Cola soda cans. I told him that he only had to put one up on the register and I would scan it four times. Less work for both of us, right? He pays and leave and a little while later our throwbacks kid comes by and says ‘Why are people so stupid?’ So I asked him what was wrong and he told me that he found three of the 12 packs just sitting there on the ground. Not thinking anything of it I just commented that people are inconsiderate and left it at that. Two hours later, the customer comes back and starts yelling at me (in Spanish, which I don’t speak). So I finish with one customer and then ask him what the problem is. He tells me that I over charged him. So I calmly take a look at the receipt and shake my head no, everything was in order. Big mistake. It’s not the answer he wanted to hear and he’s ranting again. From the bits of broken English I can gather from his angry yelling, I get that he only took one of the 12 packs home. And I say ‘Sir, you told me you had four.’ And he says ‘I did, but you told me only take one so I left the others on the floor.’ I almost smacked myself in the forehead. So, after trying to calming explain to him what I meant I tell him he can go back and get the other 3 since he already paid for them. He shakes his head no so I say ‘Ok, do you want a refund?’ And what does he say? ‘No, I want my money back.’ I say ‘Yes sir, a refund.’ He says ‘No, my f*cking money.’ I take the receipt from him and write a quick note on to Customer Service explaining what happened before sending him on his way to get his refund money back (because apparently they aren’t the same thing anymore). Half an hour later I get a call from Customer Service saying ‘That guy was a total ass’.
Some days, I really REALLY loathe my job.
In my store, we have an up and a down escalator. They are right next to each other. The top is in the womans/shoes department, while the bottom takes you to the kids department. They are the center of the store… And probably one of the biggest problems. You see, in my store, we have carts. And you can’t take the carts up or down the stairs due to long poles attached to them. They are a HUGE pain in the ass, and all of the customers complain about them… Seriously… All.
I have so many stories about these escalators, so what I decided to do was put the stories in multiple posts over time. This is the first one.
One fine day I was working in the kids department. I had just helped a woman with one of the carts mentioned earlier. She was kind of a rude customer to begin with, but I didn’t figure her to be stupid too.
She put her new purchases in her cart and went on her marry way, and I began to assist the next customer in line. Only a minute later I hear a huge crash, and look up to see the woman falling back, the cart falling as well. She managed to stay on her feet, but the cart kept getting caught on the escalator and making a banging noise until it finally rolled back and out.
Why?? Why did she think she could take a CART up an ESCALATOR?!?!?!?!
Luckily, a manager was right there, and so she called the escalator company, who we have to call whenever something like this happens. We shut off the escalator and also called Loss Prevention to ask the woman what happened just in case.
Ugh…. People….
